Meet the maker
Founded in 2020, Green Heirloom is a company that produces eco-friendly, sustainable cookware and kitchen tools. With clear and significant emphasis laid on the traditions and rights of the artisanal community, Green Heirloom was founded to champion and platform artisanal craftsmanship, creating a more direct relationship between artisans and consumers.

This Roshni Mortar and Pestle, made out of Kansa or pure bronze, with a 4:1 ratio of tin and copper, has been created by artisans based out of a workshop in Kerala using a process called sand casting. Most of these artisans come from Moradabad, popularly known as the Brass City of India. While most families in Moradabad have been brass artisans for generations, the working conditions and pay they receive for their work is dismal. Through your purchase, you’ve allowed us to more equitably support these talented artisans, who are given higher pay at Green Heirloom, oftentimes 4x what they received in Moradabad, three meals a day, set working hours, and overtime pay. As you use your mortar and pestle to grind spices, crush ginger and garlic, and more, we want you to know that your mortar and pestle purchase goes an incredibly long way!

What are the dimensions of the Mortar & Pestle?
  • Mortar Diameter: 6"
  • Mortar Height: 3.25"
  • Pestle Length: 6.9"
What is the Roshni Mortar & Pestle made of?

It is made of Kansa bronze - a 4:1 ration of tin to copper - the purest form of bronze.

Where should I store my Roshni Mortar & Pestle?

You can keep it on your kitchen counter (preferably in a cool & dry place to avoid tarnish).

What is the Roshni Mortar & Pestle best used for?

You can use it to grind spices, make ginger garlic paste, and even crack your Anamalai nutmeg! However, we do recommend not leaving acidic ingredients, like vinegar or lemon juice, in your mortar & pestle for too long as they may cause stains.

Can there be variations in Roshni Mortar & Pestle coloration?

Yes, the pestle is a little lighter in color when compared to the mortar because the composition of copper is higher in the pestle to ensure that it doesn’t break easily.

How do I clean my Roshni Mortar & Pestle?

Kansa bronze is made by melting tin and copper together. Bronze can be fragile, so the pestle has a higher tin ratio so it is stronger and won't break if it falls.

To avoid tarnishing over time and to help maintain its original shine, you can either:

  1. Make a paste with flour and vinegar, apply it on the mortar & pestle, and wash it off.
  2. Use Flitz or Pitambari for stronger tarnishing! View our cleaning video for our Masala Dabba for more deets!
How often should I clean my Roshni Mortar & Pestle?

It absolutely depends on your personal preference. If you feel like your mortar & pestle is looking a little oxidized, you can always use Flitz Metal Polish to retain the shine!

What makes Diaspora Spice Co.'s Mortar & Pestle different from standard grinders?

Our Mortar & Pestle is designed for grinding whole spices, herbs, garlic, and aromatics by hand, helping release their natural oils and aroma. With a sturdy construction and plenty of control, this mortar with a pestle makes it easy to prepare fresh spice blends, pastes, and seasoning mixes right in your kitchen.

What can I prepare with our Mortar & Pestle?

Our Mortar & Pestle is made for all kinds of from-scratch cooking. Crush whole spices, grind peppercorns, herbs, garlic, or ginger, or use it to make fresh masalas, spice rubs, chutneys, and marinades. It's a versatile kitchen mortar and pestle for anyone who enjoys getting a little more hands-on in the kitchen.

What is a mortar & pestle used for?

A mortar & pestle is used to crush and grind spices, herbs, seeds, and aromatics into powders or pastes. Unlike an electric grinder, it gives you more control over the texture and helps release the natural oils in your ingredients, bringing fresh flavor and aroma to your cooking.

What is included in a mortar & pestle set?

A mortar & pestle set includes two pieces: the mortar, which is the bowl where you place your ingredients, and the pestle, the handheld tool used to crush and grind them. Together, they're useful for making fresh spice blends, sauces, herb pastes, and other everyday kitchen staples.

Why use a kitchen mortar and pestle instead of an electric grinder?

A kitchen mortar and pestle gives you control over how coarse or fine you want your ingredients, while gently crushing spices and herbs to release their natural oils. It's especially handy for small batches of spice blends, garlic, ginger, and fresh pastes, making it a kitchen tool you'll reach for whenever you want to build flavor from scratch.
